The Wine
The 2011 Tignanello is a classic expression of one of Tuscany’s most iconic Super Tuscans, combining the character of Sangiovese with the structure and depth provided by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2011 vintage produced rich, generous wines in Tuscany, and Tignanello displays this warmth beautifully while retaining the freshness and savoury character that define the estate.
The wine offers a compelling balance between ripe red and dark fruit, refined tannins and well-integrated oak. With more than a decade in bottle, it has begun to develop attractive secondary complexity, with notes of leather, tobacco and spice complementing the vibrant fruit. It is an excellent example of Tignanello.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Expressive aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries and plums, followed by sweet spice, tobacco and leather.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, with layers of ripe red and dark fruit supported by fresh acidity and polished tannins. Sangiovese brings savoury complexity and energy, while the Cabernet varieties contribute depth and structure.
Finish:
Long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark cherry, spice, tobacco and subtle earthy character.
Producer Details
Tignanello is produced by Marchesi Antinori and is widely regarded as one of the wines that helped establish the modern Super Tuscan movement. First produced in the 1970s, it broke with traditional Chianti regulations by incorporating international varieties and using techniques that were innovative for the region.
The Tignanello vineyard sits on the Tignanello estate in the Chianti Classico area, where the combination of altitude, limestone-rich soils and careful vineyard management provides the freshness and structure needed for long ageing.
Wine Details
Vinification:
Fermented separately by variety, followed by maturation in French and Hungarian oak. The wine is then blended before further bottle ageing, allowing the individual components to integrate and develop complexity.
Alcohol Content:
Approximately 14%
Cellaring:
Drinking beautifully now, with further development expected over the next decade for well-stored bottles.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Excellent with Tuscan-style roast meats, bistecca alla Fiorentina, lamb, wild boar, veal and rich pasta dishes. It also works particularly well with truffle, porcini mushrooms and mature hard cheeses.
