Producer: Château Pontet-Canet | Appellation: Pauillac, Bordeaux, France
Classification: 5ème Grand Cru Classé (1855 Classification)
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot
Vintage: 2011 | Drinking Window: 2020–2040 | Aging Potential: 25+ years
The 2011 Château Pontet-Canet is a bold and confident expression of Pauillac. Known for its pioneering approach to biodynamic viticulture and natural winemaking, Pontet-Canet stands out as a Fifth Growth producing wines that rival its First Growth neighbours.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: On the nose we get notes of blackcurrant, graphite and warm earth. Hints of cedarwood, cigar box, and subtle crushed herbs add complexity and Pauillac character.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with firm but refined tannins. Ripe black fruit, plum, and cassis are lifted by bright acidity.
Finish: Long and poised, with a savoury, slightly wild edge and lingering notes of spice, dark berries, and crushed stone.
Producer Details:
Located adjacent to First Growth giants such as Mouton Rothschild, Château Pontet-Canet has carved out a unique identity as a biodynamic, low-intervention powerhouse.
Wine Details:
Vinification: Gravity-fed winery; indigenous yeast fermentation; aged in a mix of new French oak and amphorae for 16–18 months
Alcohol Content: Approx. 13% ABV
Cellaring: Entering a beautiful phase now, with further evolution expected through 2040
Drinking Window:
Ideal for current drinking with decanting, especially for those who appreciate finesse over extraction. Can be cellared for another 10–15 years to gain additional tertiary nuance.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
An elegant match for roast venison, grilled duck breast, mushroom Wellington, or braised beef. Also excellent with truffle dishes or firm aged cheeses such as Comté or Tomme de Savoie.
Elegant, expressive, and unmistakably Pauillac — the 2011 Château Pontet-Canet offers both classic structure and biodynamic soul, making it one of the vintage’s quiet triumphs.
