The Wine
The 1996 Château Pontet-Canet is a classic mature Pauillac, combining the estate’s naturally powerful style with the excellent Cabernet Sauvignon character of the vintage. The 1996 vintage was particularly successful in the Médoc, producing wines with freshness, structure and excellent ageing potential.
Now approaching three decades in bottle, this Pontet-Canet has developed beautifully layered complexity. Blackcurrant and cassis are complemented by cedar, graphite, tobacco and earthy savoury notes. The palate remains structured and focused, while the tannins have softened with age, giving the wine greater harmony and elegance without losing its Pauillac character.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Aromatic and complex, with cassis, blackcurrant and blackberry alongside cedar, cigar box, graphite, dried herbs and subtle earthy notes.

Full-bodied and well structured, with mature dark fruit, fresh acidity and beautifully integrated tannins. Savoury and mineral nuances add depth, while the Cabernet character provides excellent definition.

Long and persistent, with lingering notes of cassis, tobacco, cedar and graphite.
Producer Details
Château Pontet-Canet is a historic Pauillac estate located close to some of the appellation’s most renowned properties. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, the château is known for producing powerful, distinctive wines with impressive longevity.
The estate has become particularly celebrated for its later adoption of biodynamic viticulture, but the 1996 represents an earlier chapter in Pontet-Canet’s history. With maturity, it offers a fascinating combination of classic Pauillac character and the depth that comes with extended bottle age.
