The Wine
The 1998 Château Léoville Poyferré is a classic Saint-Julien from a vintage that produced structured and long-lived Left Bank wines. During the late 1990s, the estate was undergoing significant quality improvements under Didier Cuvelier and consultant Michel Rolland, leading to a richer and more polished style.
The 1998 vintage combines maturity and refinement with the depth and structure characteristic of Léoville Poyferré. Now entering an excellent stage of development, it offers a balance of tertiary complexity and remaining fruit concentration.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Aromas of blackcurrant, dried plum, cedar, cigar box, leather, and graphite with hints of spice and forest floor.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with softened tannins and mature dark fruit flavours. Notes of tobacco, cocoa, earth, and subtle mineral character add depth and complexity.
Finish: Long, elegant, and savoury, with lingering cedar and mature fruit notes.
