The Wine
The 1996 Château Léoville Poyferré is a classic expression of Saint-Julien from a highly regarded Left Bank vintage. Combining the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the silky elegance of Merlot, this Second Growth has matured beautifully, now offering complexity and structure.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Blackcurrant, dried cherry, cedar, and tobacco leaf, accented by leather and graphite.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied, displaying smooth tannins. Flavours of dark plum, cassis, cigar box, help unfold over a refined, well-balanced structure.
Finish: Long and layered, with lingering tones of dried herbs and forest floor.

Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the top estates in Saint-Julien, known for producing wines that offer both structure and sophistication. As one of the original Second Growths, the estate has steadily enhanced its reputation over the past few decades, thanks to meticulous vineyard management and modernized winemaking.
The 1996 vintage, marked by a cool, dry growing season and late harvest, produced wines with excellent tannic backbone and aging potential—this bottle being a prime example.
