The Wine

The 2016 Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is a striking expression of South African Syrah, combining Rhône-inspired finesse with Swartland’s distinct power and depth. Sourced primarily from sustainably farmed vineyards in the Porseleinberg and Goldmine sites, this vintage shows remarkable concentration and aromatic purity. 2016 was a warm but balanced year, producing wines with ripe fruit, savoury complexity, and fine, persistent structure.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Intense aromas of blackberry, black olive, violets, and peppercorn, with subtle notes of smoked meat/bacon and graphite.

Palate: Full-bodied yet refined, with layers of dark fruit, plum, and spice framed by fine-grained tannins. The palate is sleek and textural, with fruit and mineral freshness.

Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering notes of cracked pepper, herbs, and cocoa nibs.

Producer Details

Founded in 1776 and revitalised in the late 1990s, Boekenhoutskloof has become one of South Africa’s most acclaimed producers. Under the direction of winemaker Marc Kent, the estate has built a reputation for crafting wines of elegance and character from the Franschhoek Valley and select Swartland sites. The Syrah, in particular, reflects Kent’s dedication to site expression, minimal intervention, and French oak integration.
